Our station gets no service from Matinee (damn them, truly), but, as of this show, a new American pop label appears to have filled a part of the hole in station members' lives. Foxyboy records, founded and maintained by Ara Hacopian of Saturday People and Boyracer fame, has dropped a load on our station's new bin, and I played nearly each of the discs. Every Foxyboy release to date has showcased a burgeoning set of quality ideas against a background of quiet, lush twee. None of the bands seem to have harnessed the full power of these ideas: not, at least, on a terribly consistent basis. Still, some winning quality in the makeup of these bands forces light on the strengths rather than the weaknesses of the recordings. I find myself wading through three unremarkable minutes of pop willingly in order to hear the Foxgloves achieve near-genious in a bridge between chorus and verse. I only hope you guys don't mind wading with me.
