Ray Shiner, on tenor in this recording, taught at SUNY Potsdam Crane School of Music and was head of the jazz department. He was a studio musician in NYC throughout the '50 and '60's, notably playing with the Sauter Finnegan band in its final years and also with Orchestra USA under the direction of Gunther Schuller. This trio also backed opera legend Renee Fleming who sang jazz at Algiers -- another basement venue up the road in Potsdam -- every Sunday night.
