Recorded in Ngozi, Bujumbura, Bukirasazi & Kayanza (Burundi). In this song, the unidentified singer accompanies himself on the inanga, which is (according to the liner notes) a trough-zither… musicians say this type of singing allows a good balance between the voice and the instument. It is a type of music played strickly for pleasure, alone,or sometimes before an audience. In this instance, we hear a son in praise of a benefactor.

"Joined by the Dave Barbour Trio, Southern was born Genevieve Lillian Hering in Royal, Nebraska, United States,[1] Southern was the granddaughter of a German pig farmer who came to the United States in 1879. He built a flour mill in Royal, Nebraska. Her father ran the mill but lost it after the stock market crash of 1929. He then began operating an elevator of the Royal Farmers Union. She started playing music at age 3. Her only child, Kathryn King, said Southern stopped performing because of its negative psychological effect. In a 2010 newspaper article, King talked about Southern's shyness, saying she had _a paralyzing case of performance anxiety. Just contemplating performing made her enormously anxious and depressed._ - wiki"
"Over the course of many years, Chopin wrote 59 Mazurkas for piano, based on the traditional Polish folk dance in 3/4 meter. This, however, more closely aligns with another traditional 3/4 dance of Poland -- The Kujawiak -- which is typically characterized by a rubato tempo, calm & lyrical. "
"Morgan's (1933-2007) father Stanley was a guitarist with Harlan Leonard and the Rockets and The Ink Spots, and his mother, Geraldine, was a 14-year-old student when she gave birth to him. Morgan took up his father's instrument at an early age, but lost interest the moment he saw Charlie Parker take his first solo with the Jay McShann band at the Paradise Theater in Detroit, Michigan. Stanley introduced them backstage, where Parker offered Morgan advice about starting out on the alto sax, and they met at a music store the following day. Morgan, seven years old at the time, assumed they'd be picking out a saxophone, but Parker suggested he start on the clarinet to develop his embouchure. Morgan practiced on the clarinet for about two years before acquiring a soprano sax, and finally, an alto. With the release of his first solo release in 1956, the album copy hailed Morgan as the new Charlie Parker, who had died the same year. In his own words, Morgan was _scared to death_ by this and _self-destructed_. He later came back strong. -- wiki On this date with him, "
The band is composed of three veterans of adventurous music in NYC: Robbie Lee on woodwinds and electronics, John Thayer on percussion and synthesizers, and Ezra Feinberg on acoustic and electric guitars. The name Earth Room comes from “The New York Earth Room,” the famous 1977 experiment by the NYC artist Walter De Maria, in which soil was laid down in a loft gallery at 141 Wooster St in Soho. It has been maintained there ever since. The three musicians got together throughout 2019 and pre-pandemic 2020, recording during off hours at Thump Studios where John is the in-house engineer. After the pandemic hit they got to work combing through these sessions, finding the juicy bits, seeing what worked, cutting the fat, peeling the onion, and tying the room together until there were no more overdubs or edits needed. - label website
