I don't have the context to dig deeply into MLK's significance, and this is a punk rock radio show anyway, so I'll leave it to others who do. But the last section of this, his last speech the evening before he was murdered, has always had a powerful impact on me.
First song of theirs I ever heard; they were one of my most-played bands in 2020. I'm not just playing this song because they're black, and their songs aren't all about social injustices, but this one reminds all of us that the Promised Land Dr. King spoke of is still on the other side of the mountaintop for most nonwhite/non-Christians in America.
They're from York, not Sydney OZ, they've been very busy in the past 18 months, and you can expect to hear a lot more of them on Monday's LRC in 2024: https://neonkittens.bandcamp.com/
Wanda Maria Ribeiro Furtado Tavares de Vasconcelos ... I went down the discographical rabbithole on this one, so you don't have to. But I'll tell you that hearing this makes me appreciate how creatively Neon Kittens covered it earlier in the show.
